Bringing a pet to Thailand

Pet import to Thailand checklist

Use this as a working checklist while you plan. Every step links to the full guide. The Thai sequence and destination-specific return planning both matter.

Before booking, confirm current requirements with the Thai DLD, your airline and the origin-country authority.

Source check details

The scoped Thai import claims and authority links cited on this page were checked on 1 August 2026. Thailand's Department of Livestock Development, airlines and origin-country authorities change their rules without notice. Treat this as orientation, then confirm every current requirement with the DLD, your airline and your origin-country authority before you book or travel.

August 2026 review

What we checked this update

The reviewed detailed Thai guide is limited to USA-origin dogs, cats and rabbits. For another origin, this checklist does not copy its vaccination wait, booster exception or permit-processing lead time; obtain those in writing from the responsible AQS. It requires an implantation certificate and matching identifier, but does not state a universal ISO-format, chip-before-vaccination or three-day arrival-confirmation rule. Its detailed scope is dogs, cats and rabbits from the United States, so other origins must confirm with their AQS and origin authority. Thai source.

Write down the route you are actually checking

Complete this record so the AQS, origin authority and airline answer the same question. It is a planning aid, not an application or travel document.

Before you book anything

  1. Read the full import guide.
  2. Confirm your airline will carry your pet on your route — see airline pet policies and snub-nosed breeds.
  3. Confirm an accepted arrival AQS. The reviewed official sources do not establish a U-Tapao pet-import AQS; see U-Tapao or Bangkok.
  4. Budget with our import cost guide.

Build the route-specific paperwork sequence

  1. Microchip — obtain the implantation certificate and use the same identifier on every record. The reviewed Thai source does not state a universal ISO-format or chip-before-rabies rule. Microchip guide
  2. All required vaccinations — complete the set confirmed for the species and origin, then follow the responsible AQS’s stated permit sequence. Rabies and titer guide
  3. Return-country planning — a titer and wait can apply for UK or EU return. Australia instead requires an approved-country pathway; do not assume a test performed in Thailand qualifies. DAFF FAQ.
  4. Health certificate — obtain the exact origin document, issuer, endorsement and validity window. Health certificate guide
  5. DLD application and permit — file application form R1/1 through the confirmed path. The reviewed USA source offers a pre-travel email path and an accompanied-arrival exception with originals ready; the operating airline may still require the issued permit before boarding. Other origins must obtain their written sequence. Import permit guide

Two weeks before departure

  • Follow the responsible AQS’s current itinerary-notification instructions; the reviewed source gives no universal three-day rule.
  • Re-read every document against the DLD and airline requirements.
  • Confirm the container against current IATA CR1 and the operating airline; IATA does not approve crate brands. IATA CR1.
  • Carry copies of every certificate, permit and endorsement in hand luggage.
  • Save Animal Quarantine Station contacts from the arrival guide.
  • If you may leave Thailand again, read the export hub and export checklist early.

On arrival in Thailand

An agent is optional. If used, request an itemised scope and verify government and airline requirements directly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copied timing — using USA-specific vaccination and permit deadlines for another origin instead of the responsible AQS’s written sequence.
  • Airline vs government — confirm both documentary sets before booking.
  • Assuming a universal arrival-notification rule — follow the responsible AQS’s current instructions.
  • No return-trip plan — identify the next destination’s pathway before arranging a titer test. Its laboratory, location and timing rules determine whether a test is useful. See the export checklist.

Frequently asked

How long before travel should I start?

No universal duration is stated here. Obtain the actual origin’s vaccination sequence, permit channel and lead time from the responsible AQS, then add origin-export and airline time. Australia’s later return pathway is separately governed.

Can I print this checklist?

Yes. Use your browser print function on this page. The step links stay useful on screen; for travel, keep PDF copies of every official certificate and permit instead.

What if my airline requires the permit before check-in?

Follow the carrier’s written rule. The reviewed USA guide allows an accompanied-arrival permit application with the required originals ready, but explicitly warns that some airlines may require the Thai permit before boarding. If the carrier requires it, use the pre-travel path. USA-scoped route options.

Do cats need the same vaccines as dogs?

No. The reviewed USA-origin Thai source lists rabies and feline panleukopenia for cats. For dogs it lists rabies, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis, with its stated leptospirosis-test alternative. Ask the responsible AQS to confirm the actual origin’s set and sequence. See the vaccination guide.

Which airport is best for Pattaya?

Suvarnabhumi is documented in the reviewed sources. Those sources do not establish a U-Tapao pet-import AQS, so obtain written DLD confirmation before considering it. See U-Tapao or Bangkok.
