Taking a pet from Thailand to Sweden

For direct arrival from Thailand, Sweden names Stockholm Arlanda and Gothenburg Landvetter as pet entry airports. Prepare the veterinary record first, then arrange the certificate, owner declaration and Customs check for your route.

Before booking, confirm current requirements with the Thai DLD, your airline and the destination-country authority.

Source check details

Thailand’s own steps were checked on 7 October 2026 against the DLD’s manuals; the other sources cited on this page were checked on 1 August 2026. Export rules — Thai DLD procedures, destination-country requirements and airline policies — change without notice. Use this as orientation, then confirm every current requirement with the DLD and the destination country's authority before booking.

The timeline — work backwards from your flight

If your pet needs a new titer, the waiting period determines the first possible certificate date. Airline pet space is a separate booking.

What Sweden / the EU requires from Thailand

Your routeWhat to arrange
Direct arrival from ThailandStockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter. These are the designated traveller airports; airline acceptance still depends on your pet and flight.
First EU entry elsewhereHave the pet checked and the health certificate stamped there. On arrival in Sweden, use a customs declaration post and report the pet through the red lane.
Non-commercial certificateJordbruksverket identifies form E9.207 and an owner declaration. The owner-declaration page we previously cited (E9.204) no longer loads, and the authority’s form shop lists more than one variant, including a transit form, so ask Jordbruksverket which current owner declaration applies to your journey; its guidance on bringing dogs and cats to Sweden is the starting point. Ask the Thai official veterinarian to use the applicable current model and attach the identification, vaccination and titer records.
Tapeworm treatmentSweden does not require it for pet dogs or cats. An onward journey to another country may.

Jordbruksverket’s Thailand-category instructions, checked 8 September 2026. Moving a pet to a new owner or outside the owner-travel conditions uses a different certificate process.

Did the titer test before Thailand?

For a pet habitually resident in the EU, a satisfactory test completed and recorded in its passport before leaving can remove the 90-day wait. Rabies vaccination must remain continuously valid. An existing test alone does not confirm this return exception. Commission source.

Using an EU-issued passport? An EU-resident owner returning after a short stay may use it if valid, with the required rabies and titer entries completed before leaving. It does not cover an owner now resident in Thailand, who needs an animal health certificate even when moving back. First imports use the certificate route. Other recognised passport frameworks need the receiving authority’s instructions. Thai export requirements still apply. Commission passport guidance (checked 8 September 2026).

The Thai export side (DLD)

Parallel Thai requirements:

Thai-side documentNotes
Export licence (R.9) and health certificateThailand’s side: apply on DLD form R.1/1 to the animal quarantine station at your departure airport, online through DLD e-Movement or in person, with all papers one to two weeks ahead. Bring your pet for the station’s health check no more than 2–3 days before the flight; the station issues the export licence (R.9: 250 baht, valid 9 days) and, on its own application, a free export health certificate, so confirm with it that both will be ready before you fly. DLD export licence manual; DLD Region 9 procedure.
Destination import rulesAttach the destination authority’s import requirements (NOC, import licence, SPSIC, etc.) so the Thai health certificate matches.
Identification, vaccinations and testsCarry the records required by the destination and the responsible AQS.

See export process.

Common mistakes on this corridor

  • Starting with Thailand only — destination import permits and tests are usually the long pole.
  • Expired vaccinations — a lapsed rabies shot can void import clearance.
  • Microchip mismatch across Thai export papers and destination import forms.
  • Bringing your pet to the station too early — the health check is no more than 2–3 days before the flight, and the export licence (R.9) is valid 9 days (DLD Region 9 procedure).
  • Relying on an old passport without checking eligibility — first imports need the certificate route; a return-passport exception has specific conditions.
  • Entering via a non-designated point — each country lists approved entry points for pets from third countries.

Departing from Pattaya — confirm the port and DLD sequence

U-Tapao is the nearest airport to Pattaya. It is in Ban Chang district, which the Chonburi animal quarantine station covers (DLD station areas), but the DLD’s list of stations names none at the airport (DLD station map). Get written confirmation from the Chonburi station before you plan a U-Tapao departure; otherwise plan the flight from Suvarnabhumi.

The station’s health check is no more than 2–3 days before the flight (DLD Region 9 procedure), normally at the station of your departure airport unless its vet agrees another place. From Pattaya that can mean the station visit and the flight are two separate trips, so book the visit and the transport together.

Using an agent is optional

An agent cannot change government or airline rules. If you request assistance, obtain an itemised scope and verify each regulated requirement directly with the authority. Pattaya Pets has not independently measured agents’ prices, error rates or outcomes.

Frequently asked

How long does moving a pet from Thailand to Sweden take?

A pet habitually resident in the EU can qualify when its passport records a satisfactory test completed before leaving and rabies cover stays continuous. Otherwise sampling must be at least 90 days before certificate issue. Commission source.

Does Sweden require tapeworm treatment?

Jordbruksverket does not require tapeworm treatment for pet dogs or cats entering Sweden. Check the rules of any onward destination separately.

Is the EU pet passport enough to enter Sweden from Thailand?

An EU-issued passport works only for a qualifying return after a short stay: the owner must remain EU-resident and the valid passport must show the required rabies and titer entries made before EU departure. First imports and owners in Thailand relying on an EU-issued passport need an animal health certificate. Check other recognised passports with the receiving authority. Thai export papers remain necessary.

Can my pet avoid the standard titer timing into Sweden?

A pet habitually resident in the EU can qualify when its passport records a satisfactory test completed before leaving and rabies cover stays continuous. Otherwise sampling must be at least 90 days before certificate issue. Commission source.

Where is my pet checked if I enter the EU before Sweden?

At the first designated EU entry point, where the health certificate must be stamped. You still report the pet to Swedish Customs when entering Sweden. The EU guide explains the shared veterinary requirements.

Can I fly my pet out of U-Tapao?

Only if the DLD confirms it in writing. U-Tapao is in Ban Chang district, which the Chonburi animal quarantine station covers (DLD station areas), but the DLD’s list of stations names none at the airport (DLD station map). Ask the Chonburi station in writing whether it can examine your pet and issue the export licence (R.9) for a U-Tapao departure; if not, plan the flight from Suvarnabhumi.

How should I plan the transfer to the departure airport?

Use a vehicle that accepts the animal and crate, confirm the airline’s check-in cut-off and leave route-specific contingency time.

Should I stay near the departure airport?

Decide from the confirmed examination appointment, airline check-in time and road conditions. This guide has no evidence for a universal recommendation.
