Taking a pet from Thailand to Italy

Italy applies the same EU veterinary rules as Germany or France for pets arriving from Thailand — plan in quarters, not weeks.

Rules change — verify before you act

The regulated claims and authority links cited on this page were checked on 1 August 2026. Export rules change without notice. Confirm with the DLD and the destination authority before booking.

What Italy / the EU requires from Thailand

Italy follows standard EU third-country entry rules for pets arriving from Thailand: ISO microchip, current rabies vaccination, rabies titer test (blood ≥30 days after vaccination), three-month wait from the sample date, and an EU animal health certificate endorsed on the Thai side. See exporting a pet to the EU.

Parallel Thai requirements: DLD export permit (R1/1 filed as the responsible AQS directs), then a mandatory DLD health examination no more than 2–3 days before travel. If compliant, the station issues R9 and the health certificate. The reviewed procedure gives no universal email channel or 15-day deadline. DLD source. See export process.

Routing to Rome or Milan

Bangkok–Rome and Bangkok–Milan routes exist; pets must enter via a designated EU traveller point of entry. Confirm with the airline whether your pet travels cabin, hold or cargo.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an old EU pet passport works from Thailand.
  • Booking flights before the titer wait finishes.
  • Missing the DLD examination window — it must occur no more than 2–3 days before travel.

If you came the other way, see our guide to From Italy (import).

Departing from Pattaya — confirm the port and DLD sequence

Ask the AQS responsible for the departure port how and when to file R1/1. The reviewed DLD procedure does not establish a universal email intake, 15-day deadline or separate three-day flight-confirmation rule. It requires the animal’s health examination no more than 2–3 days before travel; if compliant, the station issues R9 and the health certificate. DLD procedure. The reviewed DLD map does not list a U-Tapao/Rayong airport AQS, so obtain written DLD confirmation before routing there. DLD AQS map.

Using an agent is optional

An agent cannot change government or airline rules. If you request assistance, obtain an itemised scope and verify each regulated requirement directly with the authority. PattayaPets has not independently measured agents’ prices, error rates or outcomes.

Frequently asked

Does Italy require the rabies titer test from Thailand?

Yes, under standard EU third-country rules — blood sample at least 30 days after vaccination, then a three-month wait.

Is the EU pet passport enough to enter Italy from Thailand?

No. You need a third-country EU health certificate endorsed on the Thai export side.

How long does export from Thailand to Italy take?

If a new titer is required, EU rules impose a three-month wait from the sample date. Laboratory, DLD, certificate and airline time are additional and route-specific; this guide does not state an unsupported total.

Which Italian airports accept pets from third countries?

Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa are common entry points — confirm designated traveller entry rules before booking.

What is the Thai DLD export fee?

The reviewed DLD procedure does not publish one dependable end-to-end price. Ask the responsible AQS and keep government charges separate from veterinary, laboratory, crate, airline and optional-agent quotes.

Can I fly my pet out of U-Tapao?

The reviewed DLD map does not list a U-Tapao/Rayong airport AQS. That is a verification gap, not proof that no later service exists; obtain written DLD confirmation before booking.

How should I plan the transfer to the departure airport?

Use a vehicle that accepts the animal and crate, confirm the airline’s check-in cut-off and leave route-specific contingency time.

Should I stay near the departure airport?

Decide from the confirmed examination appointment, airline check-in time and road conditions. This guide has no evidence for a universal recommendation.
