Taking a pet out of Thailand · By destination
Taking a pet from Thailand to South Africa
South Africa classifies origin countries carefully for rabies control. The Thai export process is standard; the South African veterinary import permit and any additional tests set your timeline.

Entering South Africa from Thailand
Pet import is overseen by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD). Typically you need a veterinary import permit, an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, a health certificate from Thailand and compliance with any additional requirements for pets arriving from Thailand's rabies status. Confirm the current detail with DALRRD and an experienced import veterinarian with plenty of lead time.
The Thai side and routing
All of this sits on top of the Thai export process — the DLD health certificate and export permit — which your pet must clear on the way out. The two sets of paperwork have to agree.
Most routes from Bangkok to South Africa involve at least one stop, which affects airline pet policies and total journey time. Plan crate comfort and layover rules with your agent or airline.
